Coach Patrick’s Story

My fascination with running began on a cinder track in 1986. Unable to make the soccer team with my friends in Junior High due to a “lack of fitness” cited by the coach, my mother began taking me to the local track twice a week. If you really want to make that team, she said, you will run two miles a night.

Man, did I try to cheat! But she had rocks that she used to keep count and there was no fudging…no shortcuts. We did that for 7th and 8th grade for most of the year when I wasn’t playing with the local club team.

Fast forward and I was captain of the HS varsity soccer team, then captain of my collegiate rowing team (Boston University) and eventually an 18-time Ironman with 4 Boston Marathon finishes and 5 trips to compete in the world championships in Kona, Hawaii.

But all of this started with a run. On a cinder track. In 1986.
